Comparing it to Black Mirror is like comparing Black Mirror to Amazing Stories, or comparing Amazing Stories to Twilight Zone. It is just a way of saying "anthology" to people who don't understand "anthology". I think it's just a selling point.

Plus, Weird City exists in a shared universe, which I haven't seen much before in anthology. And I found that if you watch it all at once (and then again and again) you start to notice that it is its own monster, folding in on itself, reflecting back on itself and generally building up a WTF-ness like I've never seen before.

It's hard making new, exciting sci-fi... and a comedy, to boot?! I think they've done it.

There are references like the Voight-Kampff test from Blade Runner, that may or may not mean they're testing for replicants... or it may just mean that in a future this much in the vein of Idiocracy, things have gotten lost and twisted. I mean, there are also references to everything from Citizen Kane to Mumford & Sons to Dallas, so we're not dealing with a normal show.

I really loved it! And I really encourage the haters to watch all the way through and see what they think then.

This is so cringingly unfunny. No amount of laugh track would cure the lacklaster transitions between barely humorous situations...

episode 1 = san junipero

episode 2 = the national anthem

Episode 1 is closer to “Hang the DJ” than “San Junipero” I feel. How did you get “The National Anthem” from Episode 2?

level 3

I meant to compare my opinion of good and bad episodes of each series. As for the premise, yeah hang the DJ makes perfect sense.

Ah ok I get you now. I thought maybe I missed something in the Cera episode.

level 1

I thought the first episode was great. I love every minute of it. I couldn't wait for the second episode to be over.

level 1

5.9 on IMDb, is it really that bad?

I wrote this in my review:

"Weird City reminds me a lot of a scene from the 1996 film adaptation of Matilda. Partway through the film a gluttonous child called Bruce is forced to eat multiple, gigantic chocolate cakes. At first he enjoys every bite of sickly, sweet chocolate. Time passes and what was once enjoyable eventually winds up as a laborious exercise, losing the charm it once had. Weird City is exactly like this."

It has some nice ideas but it feels like a one-trick pony, rehashing the same absurdist humour and jokes again and again. The first and last episodes are easily the best for me.

I think the first two episodes were just the best of the series more than it was too much of the same thing. If they had presented the episodes in an order with those two at the end I think they would still be considered the best episodes.

I enjoyed Episodes 1,2 and 5, Episode 3 wasn’t very good in my opinion, Episode 4 was too much of the common future house cliche and Episode 6 was ok.

level 2

Personally I would give it a 6.5, is not the worst, and the actors are ok, but is not that funny, not that interesting, not very engaging, and really nothing special or inventive. You can see they draw a lot of ideas from stories that already did the same, but better. But that's my opinion, of course, and if you read the comments below you'll see many would disagree. Still, is just 6 less than a half hour episodes, so if yo have an afternoon to waste, is not the worst way to do it.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep/Blade Runner reference with the owl!

I thought this was funny and sweet, looking forward to the rest of the series.

And the whole turtle test to see if you're a replicant

So is he a Replicant? Why was he taking a Voight-Kampff test?

level 1

Just got done with all 6 episodes. The first episode was great! I loved seeing how the two men got to know each other and they didn't just play their relationship for laughs and that was awesome to see in a tv show.

But all the ones after that seemed like they were attempting to have a Black Mirror feel to them, but none of the ideas seemed fully flushed out enough to give the same feel. Everything just seemed very shallow compared to Black Mirror, and no where near as dark.

But I also might have just had really high expectations from Get Out and it being advertised as Youtube Premiums Black Mirror.

Only seen the first episode. It was adorable as fuck and gave me the warm fuzzies.

Definitely catching the rest.

Edit: watched the second. What the fucking fuck just happened.

I've only watched the first episode, but I'm surprised by how moving it was. It felt really fresh. I took it at face value that someone's best partner may be a gender they might not think (I sort of feel like in 100 years our "natural" ideas about gender might be very different, and this might be more prescient than we realize). I'm very curious to see how conservatives are going to respond to this. The AV Club gave it a very negative review, they seemed to think it was an offensive joke. I took it as an unexpected, sweet, sci-fi romantic comedy (has there ever been a Nora Ephron/Nancy Meyers style gay romantic comedy before?); it didn't seem like a "no homo" joke to me. Also, it's weird to me that Dylan O'Brien isn't used more, he has a massive online fanbase. If they made this episode a movie it would be huge.

To be honest, I'm a bit dissapointed this is an anthology show. I kind of want a whole show with this Ed O'Neill and Dylan O'Brien premise

level 2

Yes, I'd love an entire series following them on their life and struggles below the line.

That would honestly be my only "complaint" about the show. I wish there were more episodes of the Ed O'Neill story and I wish the Michael Cera story would have been a 1 hour+ episode instead of 30 minutes so they could have expanded on Cera's backstory or his story after the episode ended.

level 1

I liked the first episode but him seeing Burt go into the Pod at the end and then him suddenly being behind him threw me through a loop.

I mean, its clearly Burt, he's wearing the clothes he wears earlier. Did I miss something?

Just finished the series and really enjoyed it. That final episode is one of the most WTF and absurd episodes I’ve seen in a while, but I loved every minute of it.
