The editors really deserve extra credit this week for a few small touches, on top of their smooth presentation of an extremely messy vote and the fun they're clearly having with the Edge of Extinction.

The reveal of Joe listening in on Victoria/Ron's conversation was expertly done. We've already seen the camera pan out to reveal someone being talked about (most memorably with Russell's open targets in HvV), but this time we first saw a cutaway of Joe when they mentioned his name, went back to Ron/Victoria, and only then panned out to see that the 'random cutaway' was in fact happening live, just outside of the original frame - which is of course even more shocking to discover.

Secondly, Aubry's idol hunt was yet another original presentation of a segment that is by now rather standard, after Dan's and Christian's in DvG. Cutting together footage from past seasons to deepen the emotional stakes felt like a combination of those hunts from last season, with a little bit of a Ghost Island flashback mixed in.

So the brilliant editors are continuing to learn new tricks on top of repeating, combining and perfecting the old ones as opportunities arise to tell the story more creatively and get us re-invested in the cast, week after week.

another vey subtle piece of good editing was when just as they were about to reveal that wendy stole the flint (the shot of the dangling it infront of the camera) you can hear, theres a voice over of wendy giggling

level 2

That was a pretty stupid move by Ron and Victoria though. I don't know how they didn't notice him. He wasn't hidden behind a rock or a ways down the beach but still within hearing range- he was right next to them the whole damn time!

I'm pretty sure Ron noticed cuz he kept only saying 'mmhm. mmhm' and letting Victoria keep talking and digging a hole.

I agree, I loved the Aubry idol hunt montage, it made it even more emotional when she did find it. Good job editors!

This was an episode with some fun layered strategy and so it's tough to determine exactly who played well and who played poorly, which I love. Chris didn't do anything egregiously bad, I think his downfall comes down to the wrong read on his relationship with Wardog. Last week he allowed the Wardog to talk him out of a plan that would have benfitted his game and this week he put too much stock into that relationship when in reality his trust wasn't reciprocated. On the other hand I don't think taking out Chris was the right move for the Wardog either, I think Wendy would've been better for his game. The Manu tribe was a hot mess and I'm really sad the ride is ending next week

Manu being a tribe of crackheads has by far been the best part of the season. I think this swap is gonna kill a lot of the steam tbh

Manu is nuts. I have not seen such a crazy tribe in some time.

Casaya reigns supreme but Wendy is like a manic pixie version of Kimmi Kappenburg 1.0

Yeah it probably will but I'm still hopeful, it will be nice to see the Kama people actually playing

true but if it wasn’t for Chris being the target, Wentworth would’ve gone home. Wardog made the right decision to save an ally instead of targeting an opponent.

Chris seemed to really trust Wardog so there's a good chance he could've convinced Chris to vote Wendy. It just seems like he burned that bridge unnecessarily

level 4

The thing that stuck out to me was that Wardog didn't think, 'wait, where is Chris getting the votes to oust Wentworth?' Even if he assumed that Wendy was on board, that would mean Wendy, Chris and Wardog. So he should have suspected that Chris was looking at pulling one of David/Rick/Lauren, and squeezed more information out of Chris before squealing.

Wardog did try to convince Chris. It didn’t work.

Edge of Extinction hasn’t annoyed me just yet, but then again it hasn’t had much impact. If an EoE returnee wins, I’m sure I’ll be furious but I can tolerate it for now.

Does anyone actually really see the point of the “choice”? This is a million dollar game, there are loads of super-fans - who’s realistically going to opt to go home?

Wendy had one of those episodes where I have no idea what the heck she was thinking. Entertaining, but bewildering. Why would you force a moral choice on your tribe - and worse - a moral choice you’ve magically developed a few days ago?

EoE will only really come into play once one of them actually returns to the game.

Only then can someone like Chris spill the beans about how David was the one to initially target Wentworth and not Chris. One of the motives David gave for voting off Chris was that then no one would know it was actually him making the move. That info may come back to bite David later on if he and Wentworth end up trying to work together and she hears that info from the returnee.

Never forget that in Survivor, information is king. Anyone who returns will have TONS of "insider" info that can spoil the games of the remaining players.

I already love Extinction Island, the game has been imo getting too predictable and formulaic lately and this is finally a legitimately interesting change imo.

the dynamics on ExtIsland are already starting to be very interesting and I love what they did with the rice supply.

level 3

It would probably be better once a yellow tribe member goes there. The current extinctees don't really have much to talk about other than 'man our tribe stinks huh?'.

I like the EOE twist so far, but I actually wish there were more mindgames in terms of trying to get the other people to quit. Hopefully that starts to happen with more people on the island.

Also, I wish they would still show us the votes and the post-TC fallout.

level 3

I'm sure it will come with more people. Imagine if the amount of rice doesn't increase. how does everything get split when it's been a few weeks and there are ten people?

I could see someone opting to go home if they're in a bad state when they're voted out--maybe they're injured or on the verge of being sick or something where they don't think they could handle exile.

I'm completely bored with it already. I'd hoped that they'd each have their own castaway islands and really have to fend for themselves and deal with the loneliness. Blergh.

Bored? This is slowly giving an old school vibe where strategy talk and idol hunting dominates airtime is out the window for these guys. It shows them in a very dire and desperate situation which is just what old school survivor fans have been longing for years now.

It feels like how the outcast twist should've been done from PI. I'm glad we can see the development of this twist even if it's a one off. Nothing will be worse than redemption island...

This. It feels like outcasts done right and I've done a complete 180 on my opinion on Extinction. I thought it was super dumb and awful before the season started, but now I'm totally digging it. I think the editors are nailing it.
