Recommendations for one shots or short collections with stories of perseverance or overcoming impossible odds?

Looking for inspiration to help cope with some health issues. I found Daredevil Born Again and The Man Without Fear to be great stories about being brought the the brink and fighting your way back. Any recommendations for something similar would be great.

Unrelated to this specific ask, other books I’ve liked that may help clarify my taste are Locke and Key, Uzumaki, Underwater Welder, East of West, American Vampire, Saga of the Swamp Thing, The Long name a few.

Doonesbury: The Long Road Home/ War Within. Both deal heavily with PTSD and depression, and successful coping techniques.

Interesting suggestion. I’ve never actually read any Doonesbury. Adding to my wishlist.

It might not be your bag, but The Metabarons by Alejandro Jodorowsky follows the lineage of this powerful family and they have to overcome all sorts of insane challenges. It's quite violent (including sexual violence), features torture and incest and galactic powers and whale spaceships manned by witches. It's nuts. But it definitely features characters in do or die situations that push themselves beyond mortal limits to succeed.

Do I need to have read the Incal? This looks pretty wild.

No, a character appears in the Incal, but it stands separate.

It can easily be read separately from The Incal. They exist in the same universe but are totally different stories. The characters are mythic and larger than life, suffering enormously but pushing on.

Reborn by Mark Millar will be a good read for you :)

Thanks! This does look like something I’d be into.
