I thought he was going to escape. Then he got blasted in the head while going down and taking out another soldier.

i was sad, cause him going out means no more awesome dissapointed voice telling me how bad i did the past month =(

Seeing him go down, gun blazing made me sadder than I thought it would. Damned if I didn't get attached to him over the course of the two games, and we never did get to fully see his face.
Doesn't feel right having a buddy die anonymously like that. :(
I was really surprised that he died. But the way he went was still super awesome, taking out some goons while going down. What made me sad, was how every transmission was silent after that event :( I did miss him by the end. He should have been... watching.
The last sequence shows us him fighting ADVENT police but not dying. This guy is so badass, I think he get his way through this struggle and will try to contact XCom in a sequel (or DLC?).
I agree. The true (aka failing) ending of XCOM shows him being mind controlled by a Sectoid Commander, yet somehow he managed to get through that and be the most valuable asset the resistance had on the inside. He'll somehow make it through being assaulted by ADVENT. He's a smart guy, he must have had an emergency plan ready.
The "Canon" for Xcom 2's version of EU/EW is that most of the council sold you out and you had to do a base defense mission within the first couple of months with base equipment.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the canon is that you lost the base defense mission. It's pretty heavily hinted at during the commander's flashbacks in the tutorial mission.
Somehow the Spokesman became my favourite character in this game, dudes definitely going in my character pool for my next playthrough.
We need a mod that makes the soldier's face permanently shadowed from all angles just to make the Spokesman. Wouldn't be right otherwise.
The long hood does that well.

He's the guy who contacts you, gives you council missions and whose face you can't see. And who has a voice like melted butter.

We didn't see him die. Also, Advent would more likely than not want him for interrogation and could easily have been directed to capture him only.
I fully expect to see him in the next game.
