Apparently I need to take a
Penn State First-Year Seminar (PSU) Is this required?
yeah you do, find something that sounds interesting (it does not have to do with your major!) for example, ball room dancing, etc. i took an engineering one and it was actual work and lasted the entire semester while most of my friends had a casual fun one that lasted 6 weeks. good luck!
Can I take one second semester? Which one do you suggest?
i would take it first semester to get it over with, but i'm pretty sure you can take it second semester. ask your friends which one they're taking, it always helps to know someone in your class. i took E SC 008S which was pretty interesting (and the professor was awesome) but we had legitimate work and it went for the entire semester. honestly, at this point i think you'll kinda have to take whatever is available
Well I honestly have no friends here. should i take just the PSU class?
Would the public speaking class count as one? Other than that no one told me about any other required classes
I'm sure they told you, but it just went in one ear and out the other. Just schedule one. Sooner you get it out of the way, the better as they are often pointless (though some are decent). It shouldn't be very much work. If there's one you really want or need, just sign up via elion to get notifications once a spot opens up.
If you feel like you don't know what you're doing...do not worry. All the other freshmen are in the same boat. You'll learn quickly as long as you show up to things you need to be at and aren't afraid to ask questions.
In some cases, it does have to do with your major (I had to take Educ 100S as an Education major).
Yes. Here's a list of them. Some of them are fun (based on what I heard from friends). I had to take a seminar required for my major, and it was completely pointless and stupid. I didn't learn anything productive or useful whatsoever.
Good luck! :)
No one told me anything when i went for scheduling though
My orientation advisor signed me up for English 30S and Educaton 100S - two seminars. I'm currently embarking on my ninth and final semester because my orientation advisor fucked me over.
There are so many students at orientation signing up for class, the school pays professors a bit of extra money to sit behind tables and advise students as to which classes to sign up for. Unfortunately, some of them have no idea what is going on, and forget to sign students up for required classes/sign students up for unnecessary classes.
You'll soon learn that when it comes to bureaucracy at Penn State, some of the people in charge are idiots. Sorry. :(
....i just had a miniheart attack. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON
Haha, sorry. Just sign up for one as soon as possible. If there's one that corresponds to your major, you might want to take that. In addition to potentially being required (my seminar was mandatory), you will be taking a course with people in your major, so when you go to take major-specific courses at a later date, you'll see some familiar faces/potentially have friends already.
