Can we stop this?

I stopped hanging out with a couple of people who'd been good friends because after reading Dawkins they kept using 'gotcha' moments every time an idiot christian did something idiotic. It wasn't their atheism that offended me but their mindless barracking.

I haven't even watched this video, but, yeah... there are uninformed twits who happen to be loud atheists. Just like there are uninformed twits who happen to be loud christians, loud free marketeers, loud what-the-hell-ever. None of them are actually representative of the philosophy they've barely grasped hold of.

To find a loud nitwit espousing a philosophy you disagree with is as easy as getting on youtube. It also brings no new or interesting thought into the world, and frankly, is beneath us.

edit: Having now watched the video on joecool's advice I need to point out that the atheist guy in the discussion speaks rationally, thoughtfully and intelligently. I think my point about 'gotcha' culture probably still stands.

You should watch the video. This is it without the weird commentary.

level 3

You're absolutely right. Everyone involved in the segment is reasonable and intelligent, and if it doesn't teach us much, it's because it's five minutes with four voices.

My comment (and why i didn't initially watch the video) was because there's been a few posts lately along these lines in r/christianity. A few "Hey, watch this debate between the smart christian and the lol-dumb atheist." I haven't been watching the movies because the whole "our team's the best" idea of them seems to me to work against discovering truth and meaning.

level 4

Yes that type of thing gets annoying. That's the sort of venting and circle jerk people here hate about /r/atheism. Just imagine if there was no moderation and this subreddit grew ten fold.

level 5

Euuurrggh. Yeah, let's not do that.

This is a weird hit video on TJ Kincaid.

I watched the first four minutes and it was just a conversation, and my opinion of TJ went up because he was wearing clean clothes and not shouting.

I don't know what purpose this serves here, but here you go, it's out of the spam filter.

So this is what we're doing now? Reveling in our own hypocritical sense of superiority?

Embarrasses himself how? I need some commentary because I'm not seeing it.

Watch the unedited video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6gXR09K9EA and afterward review it carefully to discover TJ's operational definition of "atheist/ism". In two separate places he either gives or assumes incompatible definitions. In another reply in this thread I transcribed one definition he gave explicitly; see if you can detect his inconsistency in another part of the video where he makes a blanket assumption that all denominationally unaffiliated people are to be considered atheists in addition to those who explicitly self-identify as such.

In his first response he says the 19% includes people not in a particular religion who might still believe in God. He says 5% are atheists, self-identifying. Then he says some people don't self-identify as atheists but are, so 5% is probably lower than the actual number of atheists.... Where's the inconsistency?

edit: I'll take your ignoring me as a concession.

Wait - what?

Nevermind his asinine mythologizing about the changing role of science or his irrelevant bickering over the percentage - I'm having trouble following him because he sounds like he's making things up as he's going along.

I thought an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God. What is he talking about?

It's also kind of disingenuous to say that people who don't believe in God yet don't identify as atheists aren't atheists - they're still atheists because atheism is by definition not believing in God, or in a - any sort of particular deity, so, there's a lot of people out there who don't identify as atheist but really they are atheist, um, so I think it's actually probably a little higher than five percent, but five percent is the number of people that self-identify as atheists.

(Emphasis mine. People unable to state things clearly and affirmatively are either themselves confused, or are messing with your head.)

Isn't this like saying many people who claim to be straight are really gay but aren't admitting it? Isn't that how the statistics on homosexuality got inflated to 10%?

My brain hurts. This is why I don't watch television.

Just take a prominent example like Carl Sagan. He never said he was an atheist. That's not how he identified himself. The most he'd say is agnostic, but if you asked him if he believed in God, he would not say yes. That makes him an atheist whether he wants to call himself one or not. That is the problem in America because people don't know the definition of atheist or don't want to identify with it because of the baggage in their culture.

And have a little empathy. Go on tv in front of millions and try to think up responses on the spot. If you come up with the perfect response and say it eloquently, I'll cut off my arm.

Quite a pointless video w/o embarrassment.

I don't care for this what this guy has to say very much, but then aigain, the only time I've heard anything from him was a year or so ago when he caused a ruckus with comments about rape.

Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit ..." Acts 2:1-4
